New To Yoga?

What do I need to know?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your first practice. This will give you time to finish registration forms, have a staff member give you a tour of the Center, get settled, and have any questions answered.

When you arrive please remove your shoes and place them in the shoe cubbies in the reception area. Socks are fine until practice begins, practice is done in bare feet.

Class Etiquette

In order for you to have the most enjoyable experience we ask you to consider the following Yoga Studio Etiquette :

Bring your own mat. We have mats for use, however, for health reasons it is asked that you provide your own mat.
In hot classes please bring water and a towel
Turn off all electronic devices, this is your time. If you are expecting an important phone call, arrangements can be made with the front desk.
Please observe quiet when you arrive into the practice space-many people come to class a few minutes early to de-stress from the day and prepare for practice.
Wear light, comfortable, non-restricting clothing, and keep in mind that all classes are co-ed
Be mindful of fragrances-lotions, perfumes etc., as many people have allergies
Savasana is the most important posture in the practice, please don’t skip it. If you must leave early please take a moment for final relaxation. Also let the instructor know if you have to leave early.
It is not good to practice on a full stomach. A light snack an hour or so before class is fine. Hydrate before and after class. Please, no gum in the studio.
Inform instructor of any medical conditions or injuries that you may have. Examples include high blood pressure, herniated disk, joint/muscle injuries, etc. This information will assist the instructor in modifying postures
Listen-pay particular attention to what your instructor says about not pushing yourself too hard, this is for your own safety and the safety of others in class. There is no room for ego in a yoga class!
Propasana-kindly leave props in the mannerly order in which you found them
Variations-keep in mind the level of class you are taking. If it is a basics class, stick to the basic postures as the teacher asks unless otherwise directed. If it is too difficult modify, if you are unsure ask!

What to Expect...

Yoga, by its nature, is very challenging yet it is not a contest or race. In fact, there is no room for ego in classes. Doing yoga correctly means paying attention to your breath and your body. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, only you. You will find benefits of each class no matter how strong and flexible you are or are not. As long as you are feeling the posture and at the same time maintaining a slow, even, and flowing breath your are practicing correctly.

In the beginning, don’t push yourself too hard. Yoga shouldn’t cause you pain (even two days later). It is a life long practice, so really, there is no need to be in a rush. This practice encourages you to begin slowly, practice regularly, breathe deeply, pay attention, and build on the small gradual changes you observe as you progress.
